PRAYERS FROM THE QUR’AN: THE STRAIGHT PATH
A Muslim can ask for anything from Allah, whether it is material or spiritual, as long as it remains within the lawful and permissible boundaries of religion and righteousness. There are no restrictions on what a believer may bring before Allah, for He is the All-Hearing and the All-Knowing. Prayer (du’a) is an essential part of a Muslim’s relationship with Allah. It is a way of expressing gratitude, seeking guidance, asking for forgiveness, and finding comfort in times of difficulty.
The Qur’an not only encourages believers to pray but also teaches them how to pray through the supplications of the prophets and righteous believers in addition to showing their devotions and hardships. These prayers cover every aspect of human life, from seeking guidance and forgiveness to asking for patience, protection, and success. Let us begin with the very first chapter of the Qur’an.
Al-Fatihah: A Prayer for Guidance
Al-Fatihah (The Opening) is the first chapter of the Qur’an and the most frequently recited. Muslims recite it in every unit (rak’ah) of their five daily prayers (ṣalah). It is often described as the essence of the Qur’an because it beautifully summarizes the relationship between the Creator and His servants.
In the name of Allāh,1 the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful.
[All] praise is [due] to Allāh, Lord of the worlds -
The Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful,
Sovereign of the Day of Recompense.
It is You we worship and You we ask for help. [The Qur’an 1:1-5]
The chapter begins by praising Allah and acknowledging His lordship, mercy, and absolute authority. This teaches Muslims an important etiquette of supplication: before asking for something, they begin by glorifying and praising Allah. They remind themselves of His mercy, His compassion, and His power over all things. This recognition strengthens a believer’s trust that Allah is the One who hears every prayer and has the ability to answer it.
The supplication then reaches its central prayer:
Guide us to the straight path -
The path of those upon whom You have bestowed favor, not of those who have earned [Your] anger or of those who are astray. [The Qur’an 1:6-7]
This is one of the most important prayers in the Qur’an. Rather than asking first for wealth, health, or worldly success, Muslims ask for guidance. By reciting this prayer many times every day, believers acknowledge that guidance is not something attained once and for all; it is a blessing that must continually be sought from Allah throughout one’s life.
What Is the Straight Path?
The central request of Al-Fatihah is for guidance to "the straight path." In Islam, the straight path [ṣirāṭ al-mustaqīm) is the way of life that leads to Allah’s pleasure and, ultimately, to Paradise. It is the path of faith, sincere worship, moral integrity, justice, compassion, and obedience to Allah. It is not merely a set of rituals but a comprehensive way of living that shapes a person’s beliefs, character, and actions.
The Qur’an repeatedly describes this path as the way revealed by Allah through His prophets. Allah says:
And, [moreover], this is My path, which is straight, so follow it; and do not follow [other] ways, for you will be separated from His way. This has He instructed you that you may become righteous. [The Qur’an 6:153]
Likewise, the Qur’an declares:
Indeed, Allāh is my Lord and your Lord, so worship Him. That is the straight path. [The Qur’an 3:51; see also 19:36 and 43:64]
These verses show that the straight path begins with recognizing Allah alone as Lord and worshipping Him sincerely but goes beyond religious rituals and encompasses one’s beliefs, ethics, relationships, and everyday conduct.
Why Do Muslims Pray for Guidance Every Day?
One might wonder why Muslims ask for guidance in every prayer if they already believe in Islam. The answer is that guidance is not something a person receives once and never needs again. Life constantly presents new choices, temptations, uncertainties, and challenges. A believer seeks Allah’s guidance not only to find the truth but also to remain steadfast upon it.
For this reason, Muslims repeat this prayer many times every day during their ritual prayers. They recognize that without Allah’s guidance, they may become distracted by worldly desires, make poor moral choices, or gradually drift away from what is right. Asking for guidance is therefore an expression of humility and dependence upon Allah rather than a sign of uncertainty in faith.
At the same time, Allah promises to increase the guidance of those who sincerely seek Him:
As for those who are guided, He increases them in guidance and grants them their righteousness. [The Qur’an 47:17]
How Can a Person Attain the Straight Path?
The Qur’an teaches that guidance is both a gift from Allah and something that people actively strive for. Muslims believe that attaining the straight path involves sincerely believing in Allah, learning and reflecting upon His revelation, worshipping Him with devotion, and striving to live according to His commandments. It also requires repentance after mistakes, patience during hardships, gratitude in times of ease, and continuous self-improvement.
Allah promises His guidance to those who strive for His sake:
And those who strive for Us - We will surely guide them to Our ways.1 And indeed, Allāh is with the doers of good. [The Qur’an 29:69]
For this reason, asking Allah for guidance is always accompanied by sincere effort. A believer prays for the straight path while also seeking knowledge, performing righteous deeds, and avoiding actions that lead away from Allah. Prayer and action go hand in hand.
The prayer for the straight path summarizes the lifelong journey of every believer. It is far more than a request for direction; it is a daily commitment to remain close to Allah, seek His help in every circumstance, and follow the way of the prophets and the righteous until the end of one’s life.
